The dream of Gram Swaraj has been realised through panchayati raj institutions, says Governor Bangalore: Gandhian thoughts need to be articulated in a modern idiom so that the younger generation can understand and appreciate them, Governor Rameshwar Thakur has said. Speaking at a seminar organised by the Karnataka Gandhi Smaraka Nidhi at the Gandhi Bhavan here on Tuesday, he said the Gandhian ideal of ‘Swadeshi’ had found a new interpretation through intellectual property rights and patents, where innovations of a community could not be hijacked by more powerful forces. The dream of Gram Swaraj had been realised through panchayati raj institutions, he said. Mr. Thakur recalled the days of the freedom movement and said he had participated in the Quit India Movement in 1942 in response to the call of Mahatma Gandhi. As a student, he regularly attended prayer meetings held by Gandhiji in Calcutta, he said. Mr. Thakur suggested that the library at the Gandhi Bhavan be developed as a storehouse of all available literature on Gandhiji. Rebate on KhadiThe Governor on Tuesday announced a Gandhi Jayanti special rebate on Khadi products in all Khadi and Gramodyog emporiums in the State. The rebate for cotton Khadi, poly vastra and woollen items is 35 per cent, while the rebate for silk is 20 per cent. The rebate is valid for the next 45 days.
