US varsity plans study on AIDS

Another AIDS care and support centre proposed to be set up in Nellore district


NELLORE: The University of California will soon conduct a pilot study on AIDS both in Nellore and Prakasam districts.

Accordingly, Professor and Associate Dean for academic programmes of ULCA School of Nursing Adeline Nymathi visited Nellore on Wednesday along with Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Panabaka Lakshmi. She interacted with officials of Andhra Pradesh State AIDS Control Society (APSACS) as well as with HIV-infected patients.

Later talking to reporters, the Union Minister said that the objective of the pilot study was to explore innovative methods to strengthen the rural rehabilitation services for HIV infected and AIDS patients with the existing AIDS Awareness and Sustained Holistic Action (ASHA) network and women volunteers.

Outlining the objectives of the study, the visiting professor and associate dean said that they would conduct the study in two districts to find out ways to provide community-based rehabilitation for those HIV-infected and AIDS patients, who had little or very little access to medical care.

She said that the study would be taken up in association with the department of Ayurveda Yoga Unani Sidda and Homeopathy (AYUSH) and other related departments of the Centre and the State to find out better ways to serve the poor and vulnerable person besides exploring ways to mitigate agonies of the rural people especially HIV infected children and women.

Assistant Project Director of APSACS B. Kalidas said that the study in two districts would also be conducted to find out ways to improve awareness levels on hygiene as well as on access to medical care besides finding out ways to serve the nutritious food to AIDS and HIV infected patients.

He said that the APSACS would soon sanction another care and support centre for Nellore district to provide better services to HIV infected persons.
