“How is it that their counterparts in Tamil Nadu joined the protest” PUDUCHERRY: The Secretary of the Puducherry unit of the Communist Party of India N. Kalainathan on Wednesday flayed the Congress for not taking part in the protest staged by its alliance partners including the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam seeking early implementation of the Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project. The decision of the Puducherry unit of the Congress to stay away from the protest on the issue and certain decisions of the UT Government made one doubt their secular credentials. On the local Congress leadership’s stand that they had stayed away from the protest fast on the ground that they had not got the party high command’s permission, he asked if so how could their counterparts in Tamil Nadu joined the protest. For secularismThe CPI had extended support to the Congress Government in Puducherry only to defend secularism, Mr.Kalainathan said, adding that his party’s apprehensions in this regard had been conveyed to the leadership. Further discussionsThe CPI would hold further discussions and if necessary, the party leaders would apprise Chief Minister N.Rangasamy on the issue. Accusing the Government of attempting to “hush up” facts regarding the reason behind the death of a construction worker at the general hospital recently, he said the CPI would move the High Court if necessary. PadayatrasThe party units would hold padayatras at 14 places in Puducherry and Karaikal regions to highlight various issues including the rise in the prices of essential commodities and construction materials.
