Garbage clearance: contract to women SHGs renewed

Staff Reporter

‘Almost all councillors want SHGs to take up the work’

TIRUPUR: Tirupur Municipality has renewed the contract for women self-groups that are involved in the cleaning works in several parts of town for one more year.

As part of the privatisation drive, the municipality has entrusted the garbage cleaning work to these groups at 19 of the 52 wards in the municipality through competitive bidding.

Municipal Commissioner M. Ashokan said that the local body had resorted to the move as it had only 700 sanitary workers against the sanctioned strength of 1,200 workers.

The town, which has a high rate of floating population owing to garment exports, was badly in need of a cleanliness drive.

K. Selvaraj, Municipal Chairman, said that almost all the councillors were demanding the handing over of the work to SHGs impressed with their quality of service. He said that the SHGs were engaging workers.

Arrangement

According to the arrangement, the local body supplies necessary equipment, including pushcarts, to SHGs to undertake door-to-door garbage collection. From street corners, the garbage is transported to the dumping yard by the municipality with its own vehicles.

Out of 19 wards, self-help groups in eight wards got their contract renewed for a year following a bid. The municipal council in its recent meeting approved the contract.

Mr. Ashokan said that the municipality could not extend the service to more wards, as it would cause financial loss to the local body.
