News Analysis
* In a report “India reaches out to Kabul citizens” (October 2, 2007), on how India has undertaken a novel reconstruction project there that will directly benefit its citizens — the building of five multi-purpose toilets in busy parts of the city — the name of Sulabh International chief Bindeshwar Pathak was incorrectly mentioned as Bindeshwar Dubey. (The report appeared in some editions.) * In a report “‘BJP will treat DMK as political opponent on ideology basis’” (October 3, 2007, page 8), a subheading was “No precedence” and the fourth paragraph was: “There had been no precedence in Tamil Nadu of houses of rival party functionaries and offices being attacked.” In both instances, the word should have been “precedent”. * A sentence in the eleventh paragraph of a report “Power transfer to BJP is unlikely in the coming week” (Karnataka, October 1, 2007, page 1) was: “I stood politically isolated for several months and was even charged with surreptiously extending support to my son to enable him to become Chief Minister.” The word should have been “surreptitiously”. * The Guardian in its “Corrections and Clarifications” column on October 2, 2007, says: “We wrongly described Hillary Clinton and Rudolph Giuliani as anti-abortion candidates in a Comment piece (‘This city is not nearly as liberal or different as New Yorkers believe’, page 31, yesterday). Both are pro-choice.” (The article was published in The Hindu on October 2, 2007, Op-Ed page, with the heading “New York not so different from rest of U.S.”.) * In a report “India ‘A’ pulls off a thrilling one-run win” (“Sport”, October 1, 2007), India A’s sixth wicket, which fell at 249, was missing in the scorecard. * A report “[Viswanathan] Anand is now undisputed World champion” (“Sport”, October 1, 2007) mentioned that Vladimir Kramnik had dislodged Garry Kasparov as the champion nearly two months before Anand beat Alexei Shirov of Spain to claim his first world championship title. While the Kramnik-Kasparov match took place from October 8 to November 2, 2000, Anand’s match with Shirov was held from December 20 to 24 the same year.
