Workshop held on the “role of media in preventing spread of HIV/AIDS”
KARUR: The sensitivities of HIV-infected should be kept in mind while reporting cases or incidents of AIDS.
Fantasies and sensationalism should be kept aside and moderation should be the watchword, speakers told journalists at a workshop on the “Role of media in preventing spread of HIV/AIDS” here on Saturday. Solidarity and Action Against the HIV Infection in India (SAATHII) organised the workshop.
SAATHII Country Director L. Ramakrishnan noted that the role of media was very important in ushering in a transformation of the public mindset towards HIV/AIDS patients. Pointing out that stigma and discrimination were two major things that used to haunt HIV positives or people living with AIDS, Dr. Ramakrishnan urged the media to respect their confidentiality and take extra care with children with AIDS.
Objectivity and appropriate language went a long way in writing about them, he added. The workshop also addressed myths on HIV transmission. S. Swaminathan and P. Williams of SAATHII addressed the gathering.
