Stage set for ‘Devadasi’ dance fest

BHUBANESWAR: The stage is set for the second annual Devdasi National Dance Festival in the capital commencing on October 15.

The three-day event aims at providing platform for the young and promising artistes of all the Indian classical dance styles across the globe, explained festival organiser Mr. Jagabandhu Jena.

Fifteen dancers from five nations including India would be featured in the festival, he added.

The festival would be inaugurated with the ritualistic Mahari dance of Puri by Berhampur-based budding dancer Swarnaprava Biswasray, followed by Odissi dance performance by State-level Odissi dance competition topper

Raseswari Mohanty, Bharatnatyam by Jyotsna Jagannath from South Africa, Kathak by Indrayanee Mukherjee from Mumbai and Kuchipudi by Bangalore-based Sreelaxmi Govardhan.

On the second day, the event would kick off with the performance of Kolkata-based Bharatnatyam dancer Malabika Sen.

It will be followed by Assam’s Sattriya dancer by Devika Borthakur, Kathak dancer by Megumi Hiromitsu from Japan and Odissi by US-based Shalini Patnaik, the host informed.

New Delhi-based Kuchipudi dancer Yamini Reddy, daughter and disciple of the celebrated dancer couple Raja-Radha Reddy would perform on the concluding day. Her performance would be followed by Manipuri dancer Warda Rihab from Bangladesh, Mohiniattam by Kolkata-based Moum Ganguly and Japanese Odissi dancer Kazuko Yasunobu.

Award

The coveted Devdasi National Award for dance would be presented to an outstanding and young Indian classical dancer on the occasion by the last living devdasi of Puri temple, Mr.Jena informed.
