Bat auctioned for Rs. 5 lakh to fund charity programmes
HYDERABAD: Well, his bat really did the talking! For a change not in terms of runs but for money and that too for a noble cause. Australian captain Ricky Ponting proved to be a big hit during an auction organised by ING-Vysya Bank for charity programmes in the city on Wednesday night.
First Ponting’s autographed photographs were auctioned fetching about Rs 3.20 lakhs and his autographed bat proved to be bigger catch as it fetched a whopping Rs.5 lakh and the proud owner was a Hyderabadi Rajesh.
Then the cricket bat with the signatures of all the Australian cricketers fetched another Rs.7 lakh with Srinivas winning the bid.
And, there is more in the offing for the under-privileged children for whose welfare these charity programmes are being devised by the Bank.
For every run Ponting scores in the remaining one-dayers of the on-going seven-match series, ING-Vysya Bank charity will adopt one underprivileged child.
“It gives me great pleasure to be associated with such a wonderful programme.
We keep doing these things back home,” Ponting reminded.
There was something to cheer for the Indian fans. When asked if given the option to pick an Indian cricketer in the Australian XI, who it will be, Ponting’s reply in a flash was: “Sachin Tendulkar”.
Well, his frame of mind may be an ominous sign for the Indians taking on Australia in the third one-dayer at Rajiv Gandhi Stadium (Uppal) on October 5 as only in the evening he had an hour-long session in the nets and looks all set to be back in the team after missing the first two matches.
