KADAPA: Three SSC girl students of Chukkayapalle, a remote village surrounded by Somasila backwaters, in Nandalur mandal, drowned when the country boat which was ferrying them to their high school in Pothapi village, capsized on Wednesday morning. A dozen girl students had set off to the school in the boat, their only means of daily travel. A man named Mallikarjuna rescued eight girls with the help of a lorry tube, but three SSC students -- Padmavathi, Venkatamma and Roja -- drowned in the backwaters. Their bodies were retrieved by local people. The accident has plunged the village in a pall of gloom. The displaced families of Chukkayapalle were paid compensation and efforts were in progress to shift them to a safer place and rehabilitate them, officials said.
