KANCHEEPURAM: The art of making wealth from waste has impressed a delegation from South Africa led by its Minister of Agriculture and Land Affairs, South Africa, L. Xingwana.

Delegation members looked flabbergasted when briefed about the process of manufacturing non-toxic manure from domestic biodegradable waste through the vermin-composting method at Thenambakkam village panchayat near here on October 3.

Income generating programmes

They were also surprised when solid waste management (SWM) project coordinators of Hand-in-Hand (HiH), Tamil Nadu, which implements the SWM programme at Thenambakkam, told them that recycling of non-biodegradable waste helped generate additional income. The team also visited a bakery unit, tailoring centre, silk weaving centre and citizen information centre, all run by women self-help groups promoted by HiH.

Later, addressing an informal meeting at the HiH Office here, Ms. Xingwana said the team was very impressed by the enterprising attitude of the women SHGs and the support extended by HiH to women for setting up micro-enterprises.

The South African government would seek HiH’s support in formulating micro-enterprise schemes that would suit their womenfolk. Chief executive officer, HiH, Kalpana Shankar; CEO, Micro-finance, HiH, Hemantha Pamarthy and others accompanied the South African delegation during their visit to micro-enterprise units in Kancheepuram district.
