To start with, the division will function from a temporary building in Salem railway quarters and will be shifted to a new building, the foundation stone for which will be laid by the Railway Minister on the same day. Union Minister of State for Railways R.Velu will meet officials of the Southern Railway here on Friday regarding the formation of the new division. On the occasion, the Railway Minister will inaugurate the newly converted Salem-Vriddhchalam junction (135 km) broad gauge line for passenger traffic. The new division will have 862 route kilometres under its jurisdiction and the following sections will come under it, according to the notification: Udhagamandalam – Coimbatore North Junction ( 79 km), Coimbatore North Junction – Erode Junction – Salem Junction – Jolarpettai Junction (excluding Jolarpettai Jn) (277 km), Irugur – Podanur junction – Coimbatore North Junction (19 km), Podanur – Kinattukkadavu (excluding Kinattukkadavu) ( 19 km), Salem Junction – Karur Junction (85 km- new line), Karur Junction – Dindigul Junction (excluding Dindigul junction) (74 km), Salem – Mettur Dam (37km), Erode Junction – Tiruchirapalli Junction (excluding Tiruchi Junction) (137 km), and Salem Junction – Vriddhachalam Junction (excluding Viruddhachalam junction) ( 135 km). As there was opposition from Kerala to shifting Coimbatore and Erode junctions to the Salem division, the following sections from the Madurai division will be attached to the Palghat division from November 1: Pollachi Junction – Palaghat Junction (58 km) and Pollachi Junction - Kinattukkadavu Junction (21 km).
