Adoption: CBI registers three cases

K.T. Sangameswaran

Eleven persons have been cited as accused

CHENNAI: The Anti-Corruption Branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation has registered three cases to probe instances of inter-country adoptions and a person missing in Chennai.

The agency took up the investigation following a Madras High Court order. A special team was formed to probe the cases. On Saturday last, two cases relating to adoption were registered for offences of kidnapping or maiming a minor for purposes of begging, cheating and dishonesty, inducing delivery of property, punishment for cheating by personation and criminal conspiracy. Eleven persons have been cited as accused. The other case pertained to a missing child, a senior CBI officer said.

Considering the gravity of the offences, the cases, initially handled by Pulianthope and Washermanpet police stations, were transferred to the City Central Crime Branch of the Chennai Police and later to the Crime Branch CID. Last month, while expressing serious concern over human trafficking, a Division Bench of the Madras High Court ordered a CBI probe into the three cases

While one petitioner said his son Satishkumar was taken away from home at Washermanpet in March 1999, another said his son, aged four, was abducted by a gang, which came in an autorickshaw. In the third petition, it was submitted that a child, aged a year-and-a-half, was missing since February 1999.
