Master plan sought

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The people of Kakkanad, under the aegis of the Mavelipuram Residents’ Association, have called for a master plan for the area to prevent problems such as traffic congestion and narrow roads from occurring there like they do in Kochi now.

A seminar on pointers to development of Thrikkakara on Wednesday called on the panchayat and the district authorities to provide a master plan for the area.

K. Babu, MLA, who inaugurated the seminar, said plans for Thrikkakara should be made with a long-term vision. The Kinfra industrial park and the special economic zone were part of Thrikkakara and now, the Smart City would be part of it, he said. The industrial ventures would make Thrikkakara a major centre in Asia and it was set to witness a major spurt in population. Future planning should be in keeping with these developments, Mr. Babu said.

The discussions at the seminar centred on the need for a zonal bus station, decentralised waste treatment facilities, traffic planning, establishment of network of roads, rules and regulations to be followed by new buildings, precautions to be taken when new buildings are constructed, a heritage museum for Thrikkakara, and development of public service institutions and shopping complexes.

District panchayat member M.E. Hassainar said without proper planning, the land under government ownership in the area could be misused in future.

The organisers had decided to hold another seminar in December with increased participation from the local people as well as experts, M.C. Dileep Kumar, who presented the keynote paper at the seminar, said.
