Memorable visit: Devaswom Minister G. Sudhakaran having Palppayasam after laying foundation stone for an arch in front of the Sreerama temple at Thriprayar recently.

People expect Ministers to come late for functions and leave before the programme schedule is over. But Devaswom Minister G. Sudhakaran defied this perception at the famous Sreerama temple in Thriprayar recently.

The occasion was a ceremony held in connection with the laying of the foundations of an arch at the temple.

The Minister who had consented to arrive at 9.40 a.m. came 20 minutes early. After a scholarly talk on Sreerama’s virtues, he was led to the arch site in a procession to the accompaniment of Pachavadyam. He later laid the foundation stone.

When the Minister was about to leave, one of the organisers offered him a cup of Palppayasam, without knowing that it was yet to be ready. Though he was in a hurry to go, he readily agreed.

“There is no need of an apology if there is payasam still,” he told the organiser who tendered an apology for keeping him waiting.

After almost 15 minutes the payasam arrived. “It is superb. My security personnel also would have some,” said a cool Mr. Sudhakaran.

An elderly person was heard saying: “He is a great man, otherwise he would have quit the place in anger long before. He has Rama’s grace.” It was a sentiment shared by the hundreds who witnessed the scene.

It is the talk of the temple town now and it will remain so for quite some time.
