A journey to brighten rural horizons

Non-government organisations have a big role to play in the development process, especially in rural areas. New initiatives in this domain are being launched by the Confederation of NGOs of Rural India (CNRI), an organisation functioning under the Union government, with chapters in States including Kerala.

The confederation will launch a ‘Bharat Vikas Yatra’ next month with particular emphasis on technology. The yatra will be flagged off on November 14 simultaneously in all the States, according to N. Balagopal, head of the Kerala unit of the CNRI. It will focus on various target groups and will be taken out through those areas that call for attention in poverty eradication and strengthening of value-added agriculture. Rehabilitation of families of farmers who had committed suicide will also form part of the objectives.

The yatra intends to motivate people through successful self-help models in the background of challenges faced by the rural groups in the contemporary economy. It is envisaged that the NGOs participating in the yatra will develop confidence and capabilities to take up added responsibilities.

The Department of Science and Technology will co-sponsor the event.

Organisations such as National Literacy Mission, National Legal Services Authority, Indira Gandhi National Open University, National Disaster Management Authority, LIC, NABARD and various government departments are expected to participate in the event.

The yatra will spread the message of human rights.
