CHENGAM: Augmenting drinking water supply and imparting job skills to rural youths will top the priority list of the Chengam panchayat union in Tiruvannamalai district, chairman G. Kumar has said. The block would revive the profit-making motor coil-winding unit and focus on generating income. The panchayat union would also concentrate on avenues that would generate employment to the youths. As a step in this direction, the Block Development Office in Chengam was working on identifying resource persons to train the youths. Mr. Kumar said he has sent a proposal to Tiruvannamalai Collector Satyabrata Sahoo to start a motor coil-winding training programme for the youths. The Block Development Office would purchase raw materials for the programme from the panchayat union general fund. As many as 50 youths would be trained during the first phase. The programme has been scheduled for three months and a resource person has been identified. Another problem in Chengam was that some panchayats in the block suffered owing to poor rain. Mr. Kumar said a total of nine panchayats have been identified for augmenting drinking water supply. The panchayat union, on an experimental basis, would try to augment the supply at Melchengam, Andanoor and Pakkripalayam panchayats. The panchayat union has identified two new wells on the campus of Tamil Nadu Forest Plantation Corporation Limited. Water from the wells would be routed through a seven-and-a-half km underground pipeline to these three panchayats. This would help the panchayat union get 1.2 lakh litre of drinking water a day. This would be sufficient to meet the demands of 18,000 people, he said.
