Sabarimala to be made plastic-free

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Sabarimala and Pamba will be made plastic-free from this pilgrimage season as part of the total sanitation programme, Kerala Local Administration Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty has said. This was decided at a meeting between Mr. Kutty and Devaswom Minister G. Sudhakaran here on Thursday. Vendors will not be allowed to sell plastic kits, carry-bags, covers and cups. Pilgrims will not be allowed to use it too. Arrangements will be made to collect drinking water bottles discarded by pilgrims. Licence will be given to vendors only on condition that they will not sell plastic goods. All advertisements of the Travancore Devaswom Board will carry the message to avoid the use of plastic.

The Local Administration Department, in association with the Devaswom Department, will launch a campaign to restrict the use of plastic at the base camps at Vadasserikara, Ranni-Perunad, Erumeli, Aranmula, Pandalam, Thirunakkara, Vaikkom, Ettumanoor, Chottanikara, Kodungalloor, Thriprayar and Guruvayur.

The Government will examine the possibility of setting up biogas plant at Pamba with the help of Anert.
