dated October 5, 1957: Display of “Bharat violin”

The “Bharat violin” and other musical instruments made at the Sangita Vadyalaya, Annamalai Manram, Madras, under the auspices of the All-India Handicrafts Board, were shown to pressmen on October 3. Prof. P. Sambamurthi explained that the body of the violin consisted of two parts scooped out and pasted along the edges, unlike the ordinary violin which consisted of a top and a bottom plank and the two being joined by ribs on the sides. Dwaram Venkataswami Naidu played a number of Carnatic tunes and Western music on the new violin. He told pressmen that it had great potentiality. Samshti veena, a combination of five instruments _ sitar, sarangi, dilrupa, gottuvadyam and veena _ was also demonstrated.
