Ambitious target set for foodgrain output

Cereals to account for the bulk of the production


GULBARGA: The State Government has fixed an ambitious foodgrain production target of 20.81 lakh tonnes covering an area of 24.43 lakh hectares during the rabi season this year, which has begun in right earnest in a majority of the districts.

Official sources told The Hindu here on Thursday that a major portion of the foodgrain production target and the area would be covered by cereals followed by the pulses.

While the target for the cereals cultivation has been fixed at 16.14 lakh tonnes covering an area of 17.06 lakh hectares, it is 4.67 lakh tonnes in an area of 7.37 lakh hectares for pulses.

After taking into consideration the weather, the Agriculture Department has fixed the targets for foodgrains, oilseeds and commercial crops for Rabi season. For the rabi season, the oilseeds production has been fixed at 3.69 lakh tonnes covering an area of 7.64 lakh hectares.

The area fixed for commercial crop cultivation during the rabi season was 2.25 lakh hectares with a majority of two lakh hectares covered by the cotton and remaining 25,000 hectares covered by sugarcane.

Among the pulses the major area would be covered by the Bengalgram and the remaining areas would be covered by horse gram. While Bengalgram would be grown in 5.30 lakh hectares with a production target of 3.71 lakh tonnes. The production target for the horsegram has been fixed at 88,000 tonnes covering an area of 1.75 lakh hectares.

Among the cereals, jowar, with an expected coverage in about 13 lakh hectares with a production target of 10.40 lakh tonnes, tops the list followed by wheat which would be taken up for cultivation in 2.50 lakh hectares with a production target of 2 lakh tonnes.

Sources said sunflower dominated the scenario in the oilseeds with a high production target of 2.97 lakh tonnes covering an area of 6.60 lakh hectares.

The Government had fixed a foodgrain and oilseeds production target of 13.52 lakh tonnes covering an area of 6.48 lakh hectares for summer season this year.

The Agriculture Department has fixed a foodgrain production target of 6.01 lakh tonnes covering an area of 5.73 lakh hectares during the rabi season for the Gulbarga district.

The oilseeds production target has been fixed at 68,000 tonnes covering an area of 80,400 hectares. The production target for cereals among the foodgrains has been fixed at 2.87 lakh tonnes in an area of 3.63 lakh hectares and the pulses would be grown in 2.08 lakh hectares with a production target of 3.14 lakh tonnes. Among the foodgrains, jowar and bengal gram shared the lion’s share in the targets fixed by the Government and among the oilseeds.
