Nobel for Gandhi

Michael Sohlam, Executive Director of the Nobel Foundation, has regretted the foundation’s decision of not honouring Mahatma Gandhi with the Nobel Peace Prize even though he was nominated five times. Gandhiji’s stature does not in any way get diminished because he did not get the award.

Albert Einstein said of Gandhiji: “Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this walked the earth in flesh and blood.” The tribute is worth a dozen Nobel Prizes.

The Nobel is awarded to people for their contribution to various fields. One wonders how the Nobel Peace Prize would have added value to the Mahatma, who was synonymous with peace and made the whole world identify him with peace. The remorseful foundation should rather wonder whether the Mahatma would have recognised the Nobel Committee.
