Corrections and clarifications

* A sentence in the seventh paragraph of an article “A tangled web of questions and tensions” (Editorial page, October 3, 2007) was: “But it was not until 1939 under the Treaty of London signed by the major European powers (including The Netherlands), that Belgium was recognised as an independent and neutral country.” The Treaty of London dates back to 1839.

* The last paragraph in a report “IOC official’s maid, three others held” (October 2, 2007) was: “A IIT Bangalore and IIM Lucknow pass-out, Mr. Manjunath had fallen prey to the mafia while on duty. “IIT Bangalore” should have been “IIT Kanpur”.

* The last paragraph in a report “Dev Anand’s romance of a lifetime” (Bangalore, October 4, 2007, page 4) was: “The spirit of his life and the book are contained in the wonderful Sahir Ludhianvi number from Guide, said Dev Anand: ‘Main zindagi ka saath nibhaata chala gaya ….’” As a reader from Ridgefield, CT, U.S., points out, the lines are from the film “Hum Dono” (1961). The first two lines of the song are “Main zindagi ka saath nibhata chala gaya, har fikar ko dhuen mein udata chala gaya”.

* The eighth paragraph in a report “Down memory lane” (“Sport”, October 4, 2007) was: “Vinoo Mankad, the first Indian to complete the double of 1,000 runs and 100 runs in Tests, was adjudged the best in the second (1947-61) and it was received by his son Atul ….” It was an editing error, and 100 runs should have been 100 wickets.

* Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardane scored 66 off 74 balls in the first one-day match against England at Dambulla on October 1, as said in the second paragraph of a report “Good knock by Jayawardene” (“Sport”, October 2, 2007).
