IMPHAL: Security forces gunned down four militants here in two incidents on Wednesday night. Police said commandos and personnel of the 22 Maratha Light Infantry noticed two suspicious looking youths at Mallom during patrol around 9.30 p.m. on Wednesday.

When asked to halt, the youths opened fire and tried to run away. There was an exchange of fire at the end of which two bullet-ridden bodies were found. An AK-47 rifle, a 9-mm pistol and some ammunition were recovered.

In another incident, a team of the police commandos and personnel of 32 Assam Rifles asked two youths to stop at Naran Konjin in Imphal West district at 10.30 p.m. But they opened fire. In the retaliatory attack, both were killed.

The junta in Myanmar has banned local newspapers of Manipur and The Hindu at the nearby towns of Namphalong, Tamu and Kalewa. All telephone and internet lines are down. Listening to radio has also been banned.
