WOMEN POWER: State Women’s Commission Chairperson K.M. Raamathal (third from left) handing over the first copy of a CD on women’s emancipation to social worker Rajalakshmi Ammal in Karur. KARUR: Think of marriage only after attaining economic independence, State Women’s Commission Chairperson K.M. Raamaathal told a conference of girl children organised here recently. Exhorting the public to accord priority to educating the girl child, Ms. Raamaathal said education liberated girls and women from shackles including economic and social threats. Also, education provided them with a rational approach to things and issues. It was in that context that girls should think of marriage. “It would be better if girls thought of marriage after equipping themselves academically.” She came down heavily on child labour and early marriage, saying the social scourges should be ended effectively. If a woman were to be educated, then the fruits of the effort would be felt by the whole society. Along with physical enrichment, physical well being should be taken care of, she said. Ms. Raamaathal stressed on the need to ensure that was no harassment of women at work places. The Karur-based Psycho Trust organised the conference. Later, a rally was taken out from the New Amaravathy bridge at Thirumanilayur to the conference venue at Church Corner. Many women and girls took part. Trust director J. Christhuraj, coordinator A. Philorani and others spoke on the occasion.
