Sethu project: PMK holds stir

In protest against “religious fanatics” opposing it

PUDUKOTTAI: Volunteers of the Paatali Makkal Katchi on Thursday staged a demonstration in the district in protest against “religious fanatics” preventing the execution of the Sethusamudram Ship Canal Project.

In Pudukottai, the demonstration was held in front of the RDO office. It was led by party district secretary Sundaramurthy.

Arcot MLA K.L. Ilavazhagan urged the Centre to expedite the execution of the project, as it would bring long-term benefits in terms of economic development to not only the State but also the entire country.

In Aranthangi, the agitation was led in front of the Anna statue. Town secretary Jagadeesan led the demonstration.

In Perambalur, the PMK cadres staged a demonstration in front of the Collectorate. Party district secretary M. Ravichandran condemned the reported remarks made by Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Ram Vilas Vedanthi against Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.

Nagapattinam

A large number of cadres, including about two dozen women, belonging to the PMK staged a demonstration in front of the taluk office in Nagapattinam and also before the Revenue Divisional Office in Mayiladuturai in the district demanding speedy implementation of the Sethusamudram project. M.K. Periyasamy, Poompuhar MLA, participated in both demonstrations
