Probing act: Minister for Medical Education, Galla Arunakumari, with the staff at the SVRR Government General Hospital in Tirupati on Thursday. TIRUPATI: The tragic death of a 20-year old young mother in a freak accident in the paediatric ward of the Government-SVRR General Hospital, Tirupati on Tuesday night has made the Minister for Medical Education and Health Insurance G Aruna Kumari to rush to the ward on Thursday for a first hand information on the incident. It may be recalled that the ill-fated mother, Syamala was trampled to death when patients and attendants in the ward ran helter-skelter in utter panic when an oxygen cylinder spewed out gas with a loud noise when the duty staff were trying to open its cap. The incident left her 15-day old baby orphaned. Hospital authorities explained to the Minister that it was not uncommon to see gas gushing out when the duty staff in the hospitals try to open oxygen or other gas cylinders. They were heard telling the Minister that it was an old woman who triggered the panic by screaming her head out when the gas gushed out of the cylinder with a loud hissing noise. Aruna kumari has however described the tragedy as unfortunate and promised to provide a solatium of Rs.50,000 from the CMRF.
