Govt. to establish Veterinary University

CHANDIGARH: Haryana is going to have a Veterinary and Animal Sciences University to raise the level of veterinary education to international standards, provide education at undergraduate and post-graduate levels in various fields of veterinary and animal sciences, animal biotechnology, dairy development and fishery sciences and undertake research in these areas, Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said on Thursday.

The proposed university would also undertake specialised extension activities to enable transfer of knowledge to the needy. The Chief Minister disclosed that research and development in livestock sector would also get priority. More experts in various fields would become available to provide high quality animal health care and diagnostic services in addition to effectively undertaking large-scale breed improvement programme.

The Chief Minister further said that the new university would make an enduring contribution towards the betterment of owners of animals, who happen to be poor villagers, and the veterinary profession.

Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal have already established independent universities of veterinary sciences and allied fields, Mr. Hooda said, adding that the livestock sector had been shadowed by crop husbandry. There was inadequate research and extension activities as veterinary colleges were part of the State Agricultural Universities where priority remained crop production. Also, veterinary education had not kept pace with the recent scientific developments. At present there is only one veterinary college in Haryana attached to the Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, with only 40 seats.

The independent new university would ensure that about 1,000 to 1,500 veterinary graduates pass out every year from Haryana.

Mr. Hooda said Haryana was well known for its world famous Murrah buffaloes and Hariana and Sahiwal cows. There was a need to further improve livestock productivity, he added.
