Central team to assess damage in flood-hit areas

Staff Correspondent

The four-member team will visit Harihar and Honnali towns

The team will not visit Harpanahalli

Total loss estimated at Rs. 83 crore

DAVANGERE: A four-member Central team will visit flood-hit areas in Davangere district on Friday and assess the damage there. The team will visit Harihar and Honnali towns. However, the team will not visit Harpanahalli, which bore the brunt of the floods and where huge losses have been reported.

The Davangere district administration has put the total loss at Rs. 83 crore, including loss of infrastructure, crops, livestock and private and public buildings. According to Deputy Commissioner M.B. Dyaberi, 17 persons died in the floods in the district and crops were damaged in over 1,263 hectares of land. He said that there had been confusion whether to give compensation for loss of insured crops and for houses constructed without authorisation, which had collapsed or been partially damaged. He said he wrote to the Government recently seeking a clarification on the matter. Mr. Dyaberi said that the district administration had been using the money sanctioned under other heads like drought relief to compensate the people affected by the floods. There was no paucity of funds for relief measures. He said the district administration would get funds in the next few days for flood relief measures.

A video presentation will be made to the Central team about the losses.
