Total prohibition can reduce domestic violence: women’s commission chief

THENI: Total prohibition in the State alone will scale down domestic violence against women to a larger extent, said K. M. Ramathal, Chairperson, Tamil Nadu State Women Commission.

She was addressing a State-level seminar on the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005 held here on Thursday.

Harassment and torture against women have been increasing every day. Women in rural areas are the worst affected. Many do not know how to get remedy to their persistent problems.

Many women have no knowledge about Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005 and its benefits. Literacy campaign should be intensified among women in villages. Similarly, awareness campaign on the domestic violence act should also be intensified.

Briefing the details of the law, the Chairperson said that affected women might contact judicial magistrates to lodge complaints. They could also approach social workers and service organisations for legal assistance and to know the ways and methods to lodge complaints.

Timely help

Extension of timely help to the affected women is a must, Mr. Ramathal added.

Expressing grave concern over the increase in atrocities against women, she said that the Commission had received 243 petitions from 13 districts so far. Over 10 petitions had been settled and rest of them were under process.

“I have not received a single petition from other parts of the State. So we need to intensify the campaign, she said.
