Maduravoyal may escape inundation

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Areas in and around Maduravoyal and Valasaravakkam may escape inundation this monsoon as the area now has the stormwater drain (SWD) facility to carry excess rainwater from the Maduravoyal-Alapakkam lake.

Residents of Maduravoyal said that it was a much-awaited project in the municipality as several areas, including Ashtalakshmi Nagar, Bhagyalakshmi Nagar, Alapakkam and Ganapathy Nagar, get flooded with water that overflowed from the lake during monsoon every year. They recalled that several areas in the neighbourhood, including Nerkundram, were heavily inundated during the torrential rains in 2005. Residents expressed the hope that the new stormwater drain would save about 2,500 houses in low-lying areas from flooding.

A Maduravoyal Municipality official said that rainwater from nearby areas such as Porur, Karambakkam, Vanagaram and Iyyapanthangal would drain into the lake spread across six acres. The water body, originally of 40 acres, had shrunk in size due to encroachments of residential colonies, which resulted in inundation of other areas.

The SWD that covers a 1.5 km stretch from the lake would prevent flooding in areas in Maduravoyal and parts of Valasaravakkam, he said.

The excess water from the lake would be carried through the concrete covered SWD from Alapakkam Main Road through 16 streets and eight culverts. The SWD is linked to a culvert on Poonamallee High Road at Koyambedu that would in turn transmit the collected water to River Cooum.
