HYDERABAD: After a couple of representations to the Central Government, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has decided to personally take up with the Union Government the issue of providing Minimum Support Price to paddy on a par with wheat.
The Chief Minister will speak to the Union Agriculture and Food Ministries on the disparities in MSP for paddy and wheat during his visit to New Delhi later this month.
Bonus
The MSP for grade I variety of paddy has been pegged at Rs. 675 a quintal and the Union Food Ministry is learnt to have recommended bonus of Rs. 50 additionally.
Dr. Reddy who reviewed the functioning of the Civil Supplies Department with senior officials on Thursday expressed concern that paddy growers were not getting the required MSP despite high cost of cultivation. Asserting that the Government was committed to introduce Rs. 2 a kg rice scheme, he asked the officials of the Civil Supplies and Finance departments to work out the modalities for the scheme expected to cost Rs. 1,012 crore.
