Over 300 star tortoises seized

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Air Intelligence Unit officials at the Anna international terminal seized more than 300 star tortoises and 20,000 Euros from two passengers on Wednesday.

C. Rajan, Commissioner of Customs (Airport), said the star tortoises were kept in a checked-in baggage.

The passenger, Thameem Ansarali from Ilayangudi in Ramanathapuram, was on his way to board a Malaysian airlines flight bound for Kuala Lumpur. The officials on suspicion recalled the checked-in baggage and conducted a search that led to the recovery of the star tortoises.

On the same day, the authorities intercepted Rengaraj Ramaraj of Thanjavur at the Anna International terminal who was about to board a Singapore-bound Singapore Airlines flight.

When he was questioned, the passenger said he was carrying 7,000 Euros with him. However, on searching his baggage, the authorities found 13,000 Euros kept concealed in a cloth cover.
