AIDWA to launch campaign

NEW DELHI: The All-India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) has viewed with the “utmost concern” the signing of the India-American nuclear deal by the United Progressive Alliance government.

The impact of the Hyde Act on India’s independent foreign policy and indigenous welfare programmes would prove harmful to the country’s scientific development and sovereignty, said a resolution passed at the end of the three-day central executive committee meeting here.

Briefing reporters on Thursday, AIDWA general secretary Sudha Sundararaman said that at the time of the celebrations of the 60th year of independence and 150th year of the first war of independence, signing of the deal to “sell our country” was an “insult to our anti-imperialist traditions.”

The resolution called upon all AIDWA units to launch a campaign against the “dangerous consequences” of the nuclear deal and pressure the government not to proceed further.

Price rise

The issue was not limited to nuclear co-operation. The larger impact on policies and economic and military spheres must also be considered. Another resolution expressed concern over price rise.
