CID to probe alleged police role in Rahman case

KOLKATA: The alleged role of certain senior city police officials in the mysterious death of Rizwanur Rahman, a 30-year-old computer graphics teacher, whose body was found by the side of the railway tracks near here on September 21, is among the issues that will be probed by the State’s Criminal Investigation Department.

An interim report by the CID has been submitted to the State government. It does not say that the death was a case of suicide. Nor does it accuse anyone specifically, Home Secretary Prasad Ranjan Ray said here on Thursday. The final report is expected within a month.

Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had ordered a CID investigation and subsequently a judicial inquiry into the death in the wake of a public outcry.

Rahman died weeks after his marriage to Priyanka, reportedly against her family’s wishes. Priyanka’s father, Ashok Todi, is a city businessman, said to be influential.

Refusing to divulge the contents of the CID report, Mr. Ray said it dealt with “unnatural death.” It contained “facts of inquiry as of today.” The case was not closed, he said. The police officials suspected to be involved in the incident would be questioned by the investigating agency at an appropriate time, Mr. Ray said earlier. The State government sanctioned Rs. 20 lakh for the inquiry headed by a retired judge of the Calcutta High Court.
