NEW DELHI: Tata Motors on Thursday launched a new version of its sports utility vehicle (SUV) Safari. Available in both diesel and petrol versions, it is powered by a new generation 2.2 litre direct injection common rail (DICOR) engine and comes with many new safety and luxury features besides giving better fuel efficiency.

Three variants of new Safari DICOR 2.2 VTT are priced between Rs. 7.33 lakh and Rs. 10.38 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) with an enhanced warranty of two years or 75,000 km. However, the company will continue to sell Safari’s earlier entry level diesel model which is available at Rs. 6.47 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). In 2006-07, Tata Motors sold nearly 16,000 units of Safari.

Unveiling the new Safari at a press conference here, Tata Motors President (Passenger Vehicles), Rajiv Dube, hoped that more powerful and efficient SUV would boost the company’s overall sales figure.

New generation Indica

Expressing concern over the slowdown in automobile sales figure, Mr. Dube said the present market conditions were tough for the entire industry. Mr. Due said that the forthcoming festive season might give some boost to automobile sales figure.

On the company’s future plans, he said the new generation Indica was expected to hit the market next year. He also said that Tata Motors was planning to re-enter the U.K. car market, while a couple of new Fiat models would be available soon.
