KOCHI: The Trade Union Centre of India (TUCI) has demanded action to ensure the safety of workers from other States who are working in the State’s construction sector. Addressing mediapersons at the Ernakulam Press Club on Thursday, TUCI State secretary T.C. Subramanian said that the State’s construction sector was being controlled by the real estate and land mafia. ‘Hawala’ money“This is especially true in Ernakulam district where a whole lot of mega constructions are on. Over Rs.35,000 crore of the 50,000 crore hawala money that was pumped into the State has been invested in the real-estate sector.” “A good share of workers employed here are from outside the State,” he said. Mr. Subramanian said most major trade unions were hand in glove with real-estate investors. “Seven workers from outside the State died in accidents which took place at construction sites in the district during the past two months,” he said.
