Bardhan: don’t take our support for granted

PATNA: Cautioning the UPA government at the Centre against taking lightly the differences with Left parties over Indo-U.S. nuclear deal, the Communist Party of India on Thursday said the support of the Left should not be taken for granted.

“UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi has admitted the differences during her speech in New York but preferred to remain silent on how to resolve them,” CPI general secretary A.B. Bardhan said.

Ms. Gandhi’s remarks in New York before the scheduled meeting of the UPA-Left Committee on nuclear deal tomorrow indicated that the government would go ahead with operationalising it, Mr. Bardhan said addressing a function to mark the conclusion of the centenary celebration of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh and CPI leader P.C. Joshi.

Ms. Gandhi had said there was no cause for alarm in view of differences between the UPA government and its crucial outside supporter on the deal. He said unless the government put the deal on hold there would not be any reconciliation.

So far, the Left parties had not decided on withdrawing support as they did not want to foist a pre-term election on the country, he said adding the Left would continue their outside support to the government as long as it adhered to the Common Minimum Programme. — PTI
