Mr. Deshmukh also called on senior Congress leaders Motilal Vora, Mohsina Kidwai and Digvijay Singh at the AICC office here. He also and met Home Minister Shivraj Patil and Petroleum Minister Murli Deora.

He later told journalists that he was on a “goodwill visit” to New Delhi to greet the newly appointed party general secretaries.

Asked whether a change in the leadership was in the offing in Maharashtra, he said, “I haven’t heard anything.” On the Cabinet expansion he said it was likely after October 11.

Ms. Alva declined to comment on whether the Maharashtra Chief Minister was likely to be replaced or when a reshuffle was likely to be effected.
