Smooth disposal: Corporation workers clearing the garbage dumped in a portion of the Kitchipalayam yard in Salem on Friday. —
SALEM: The Salem Corporation is clearing a portion of the Kitchipalayam dump yard to accommodate fresh loads of waste. In the recent rain, the yard, which was already overflowing with waste, turned extremely slushy.
Vehicles could not be driven inside the yard to unload the garbage. The civic officials found it very difficult to dispose 350 tonnes of waste generated in the city every day.
The problems in the disposal process had also severely affected the collection. Garbage is piling up in various parts of the city, forcing the residents to live under unsanitary conditions. Hence, the Corporation had deployed earthmovers to clear a portion in the yard to ensure smooth garbage disposal. The site identified for the establishment of a new compost yard at Chettichavadi is not yet ready for utilisation. The Corporation has started construction works in the site recently.
Till the completion of the works, we have to utilise the existing yards for garbage disposal, civic officials said.
Once the modern compost yard is ready, we will be able to sort out all the problems in the execution of the solid waste management programme, officials added.
Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board has also started clearing another portion of the yard to create space for the construction of apartment buildings to provide housing for the sanitary workers of the Corporation.
