BHIMAVARAM: A state-of-the-art radiation facility was launched at the International Cancer Centre run by the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical Trust at Peda Amiram near here.
Addressing a press conference on Friday, M.R. Raju, founder of the trust, said that a High Dose Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy facility, using a cobalt-60 radiation source, would go a long way in cancer treatment at the centre. The facility would help provide ‘radiation boost’ at the primary affected site for all accessible tumours such as skin lesions, cervix, vaginal vault, rectum, oesophagus and oral cancers, after external radiotherapy by using Cobalt Unit, Dr. Raju said. Radiation treatment would arrest cancer cell growth effectively, he added. Dr. Raju observed that cervical cancer remained to be one of the main cancers in rural areas Radiation treatment offers effective treatment, he added.
