ALAPPUZHA: Health authorities have declared an alert in the district on the rising number of water-borne and other seasonal diseases. In a statement here on Friday, district health authorities said several cases of chicken pox, jaundice and conjunctivitis had been reported from various parts of the district. While 75 cases of chickenpox were reported from across the district in September alone, the instance of 28 jaundice cases from the Vayalar panchayat in Cherthala raised concerns of a possible outbreak. However, officials said they had initiated precautionary and control measures in the panchayat and surrounding areas. As for chickenpox, the figure of 75 was slightly lesser than the number reported in April and May, they said, adding that though conjunctivitis, was not a dangerous disease, quite a lot of cases had been reported. District-level medical programme officers were visiting areas vulnerable to these diseases and taking precautionary measures, the statement said.
