KASARAGOD: The commercial taxes check-post at Hosangadi, Manjeswaram in the district, which collects taxes from vehicles carrying goods entering the State from Karnataka, has recorded a steep rise in collection of taxes in the first six months of the current financial year. The collection of both advance taxes, which was introduced after the Supreme Court banned collection of entry tax, and security deposit from vehicles has increased here. Security deposit is the penalty collected from vehicles carrying illegal goods and goods without documents. While the advance tax collected at the check-post up to September 31, in 2007-08 financial year was around Rs.19.76 crore, the total amount collected as entry tax and advance tax up to September 31, in the financial year 2006-07 was around Rs.19 crores. The increase in advance tax collection at the check-post comes to around Rs.76 lakh. The increase in collection of security deposit at the check-post is more pronounced. While the security deposit collected at the check-post up to September 31, in 2006-07 financial year was a mere Rs.16. 99 lakhs, the security deposit collection during the same period in the financial year 2007-08 is Rs.97.82 lakh. According to sources, security deposit collection from Manjeswar check-post this fiscal has exceeded collection from some other major check-posts in the State. The security deposit collection from Amaravila check-post in Thiruvanamthapuram district, considered to be a bigger check-post than Manjeswar, is only around Rs.35 lakh up to September 31 in the current fiscal. The Manjeswar check-post has also recorded a considerable increase in the number of vehicles checked and the number of offences booked. While the number of vehicles checked up to September 31 this financial year was 1,84,159, the number of vehicles checked during the same period in previous financial year was 1,35,359. The number of offences booked during the first six months of this financial year is 2,142 compared to 1,513 offences during the same period in previous financial year.
