GULBARGA: The All India Scheduled Castes Reservation Protection Forum on Friday opposed the Government’s move to extend the reservation facility to the Christian and Muslim communities stating that it would take away the little opportunities and benefits enjoyed by the Scheduled Castes through reservation. Working president of the forum K.V. Madanan and K.K. Krishnan Kutty, General Secretary of the Federation of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Associations, told presspersons here that it was unfortunate that the Centre and most State governments were supporting the demand for reservation to the Christian and Muslim communities. Mr. Madanan said most political parties were supporting the demand. The Rajendra Sachar and Ranganath Mishra commissions had submitted their reports to the Centre favouring the demand. Mr. Madanan and Mr. Kutty expressed apprehension that if the demand was conceded the interests of the Scheduled Castes would be affected. Mr. Madanan said that the converted Christians filed a case in the Supreme Court in 2004 seeking extension of the reservation facility to them. The next hearing would be on November 20, he added.
