AIDWA stands by Minister

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) has condemned the “attempts being made by the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), Mahila Congress and a section of the media to tarnish the image of Health Minister P.K. Sreemathi.”

A resolution adopted at the end of a three-day central executive committee meeting of the association here on Thursday said the Opposition had been wilfully attributing ulterior motives behind her visit of a Kiliroor girl who was sexually exploited three years ago. The association pointed out that the incident had occurred during the time of the previous United Democratic Front government. “The UDF and a section of the media are trying to protect the influential person involved in the scandal by levelling wild accusations against P.K. Sreemathy,” the resolution said, demanding action against those going in for such scandal-mongering.

Mr. Sreemathy, a secretary of the association, is a woman leader who has been in the forefront of struggles for women’s rights in the last three decades.

The association expressed solidarity with her in her fight against the so-called sex mafia and other vested interests.
