Court boycott near-total

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Slogan-shouting and rallies marked the court boycott in the Madras High Court premises on Friday.

Called by the Madras High Court Advocates Association (MHAA) and the Women Lawyers’ Association (WLA), the boycott was near-total. Most of the Judges retired to their chambers early.

Scores of advocates barged into court halls where senior judges were hearing cases, and raised slogans against the judiciary and the police. They called upon some of the advocates present in the courts to walk out and join the protest.

MHAA president R.C. Paul Kanagaraj said the association’s general body decided to go on an indefinite boycott demanding the arrest of a police constable, who allegedly assaulted advocates on the Stanley Hospital campus.
