Insurance for plantation workers

KOZHIKODE: A total of 2,988 workers and employees will benefit from a gratuity-insurance scheme being implemented by the Plantation Corporation of Kerala.

At a press conference here on Friday, T.J. Anjalose, Chairman of the Plantation Corporation of Kerala, and Babu Thomas, Managing Director, said the scheme was being implemented jointly with the Life Insurance Corporation of India. A sum of Rs.3 crore would be paid to the LIC as first instalment.

Agriculture Minister Mullakkara Ratnakaran would inaugurate the State-level programme in this connection at Perambra Estate School here on November 2.

They said that Forest Minister Benoy Viswoam would inaugurate a cashew division of the Plantation Corporation in the district. It was being set up with a view to streamlining the functioning of cashew estates under the Corporation and to provide guidelines to cashew farmers in rural areas. Replanting would be carried out in 3,813 hectares.

Setting up of a commercial cashew nursery that would provide three lakh saplings for sale and a cashew mango syrup production unit at Kasaragod were the other projects.
