News Analysis
* In an article “Why nobody wants to buy Booker books this year” (Op-Ed, October 5, 2007), the name of Ian McEwan’s book should have been “On Chesil Beach” and not “On Chisel Beach”, as was published. * Referring to a report “Two Koreas agree to resolve reunification” and the caption of the accompanying Reuters photograph that mentioned the word “c co-prosperity” (“International” page, October 5, 2007), a reader wondered whether the word exists. It does. The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary says it means “joint prosperity”. More specifically, and in history, it refers to the “co-prosperity sphere”, which is to the parts of eastern and SE Asia that Japan occupied during the war of 1939-45. * Two reports “Two Majors killed in Kashmir gunbattle”, with a North Kashmir dateline (October 4, 2007), and “Army officer’s death shocks residents” (Chennai city, October 5, 2007, page 4), had many differences in detail. The first report mentioned that “Major Raman”, who died in a gun battle with militants, was to marry on October 28, while the second (Chennai) report said that his family was to meet in New Delhi on October 15 for the “seemandham” (ceremony during pregnancy or a baby shower) of his wife. The Chennai report is right. “Major K.P. Vinay”, the second major killed, was to get married on October 28. A New Delhi report “Bodies of Army officers brought to Delhi” (October 5, 2007) said “Major Raghu Raman” was commissioned in 1999 in 19 Jat Regiment, while the Chennai report had said that he joined the army in 2001. He was commissioned in 1999. The Delhi report said “Major Raghu Raman” hailed from Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu, while the Chennai report said the major’s family was from Velipalayam on the outskirts of Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu. The Chennai report is right. The first paragraph of the Delhi report was: “The cargo area at Palam airport here bore a sombre look on Thursday with the aggrieved family members of ‘Major D. Raghu Raman’ awaiting the arrival of his body from Srinagar.” Some readers questioned the use of the word “aggrieved”. The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary lists a meaning of “aggrieved” to be “distressed, troubled, grieved”. There were different spellings of the names. The correct spellings are Major Dinesh Raghuraman, as given in the Chennai report (and not Raghu Raman or Raman, as given in the Delhi and Kashmir reports), and Major K.P. Vinay Kumar (not K.P. Vinay or P. Vinay, as mentioned in the Kashmir and Delhi reports). * The second paragraph of an article “A better definition for the kilogram” (“Science & Technology” page, October 4, 2007) was: Their proposal is that the gram — 1/1000th of a kilogram — would henceforth be defined as the mass of exactly 18 x 140744813 carbon-12 atoms, according to a Georgia Institute of Technology press release ….” It was an editing error and should have been the cube of the number, i.e. “18 x 14074481{+3}{+rdquo}{+.} In the same article, the value of Avogadro’s constant was published as 844468863. It should have been the cube again, i.e. 84446886{+3}. It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible.
