Diana’s driver tipped off paparazzi?

Hasan Suroor

LONDON: Previously unknown CCTV footage of the last moments of Princess Diana and her boyfriend Dodi Fayed before they were killed in a car crash in Paris on August 31,1997 has sparked speculation that their driver Henri Paul tipped off the paparazzi about their movements.

The footage, played at the inquest into the couple’s death, shows Paul walk to the front of the Ritz Hotel where photographers were waiting for Diana and Dodi to emerge.

The police officer, who compiled the footage, confirmed that Paul spoke to the paparazzi on each of the three visits he made to the front of the hotel.

“That’s correct,” said Inspector Paul Carpenter when asked by Dodi’s father Mohammed al-Fayed’s counsel, Michael Mansfield, whether it was true that Paul spoke to the photographers.

Three photographers then moved to the rear entrance of the hotel and Paul is seen waving to them.

Only Paul knew that Diana and Dodi had decided to leave the hotel from the rear entrance to avoid the paparazzi.
