NEW DELHI: Left-arm spinner Murali Kartik will lead a 15-member Railways team in the forthcoming Ranji Trophy cricket tournament. Fresh from his exploits with Middlesex where he was adjudged the Player of the Year for his county in the English circuit, it was good news for Kartik, who also returned to the Indian team after a gap of 20 months. His last appearance in a one-day match was against Pakistan at Peshawar in February 2006 and in a Test against South Africa at Kanpur in November 2004. Kartik was measured in his reaction. “It is always a great honour and pleasure to play for the country and I will enjoy the responsibility given to me by Railways. We are all focussed to get back to the Elite league,” said Kartik. The Railways team includes three new faces — former Haryana wicketkeeper Mahesh Rawat, medium-pacer Sabir Ali from Eastern Railway and all-rounder Musavir Khote from Central Railway. Those missing from the last year’s squad are J.P. Yadav, T.P. Singh and Shreyas Khanolkar, all contracted to play in the Indian Cricket League from next month. A decision on who would coach the Railways team —Vinod Sharma or Abhay Sharma — would be taken next week. The team: Murali Kartik (captain), Sanjay Bangar (vice-captain), Amit Pagnis, K. Parida, Harvinder Singh, Sanjeev Sanyal, Rahul Deb, Raja Ali, Santosh Saxena, Musavir Khote, Mahesh Rawat, Madan Yadav, Siddharth Joshi, Sabir Ali, Harshad Rawle. — Special Correspondent
