Dr. NGP CAS, Kongu CAS win

Coimbatore: Dr. NGP College of Arts and Science and Kongu Arts and Science College tallied 70 and 71 points respectively to wrest the team championship for men and women in the 26th Bharathiar University inter-collegiate athletic meet here on Friday.

Krishbeethovan of PSG CAS and V. Rubadevi of Kongu Arts and Science clinched the individual championship for men and women with 12 and 20 points respectively.

The day also saw two new meet records set by A. Karthikeyan of Sri Krishna CAS (Coimbatore) and V.S. Nirmala of PKR Arts and Science (Gobichettipalayam).

The former cleared 2.01m for a new high jump record. His effort erased the existing mark of 1.98m set by T. Pradeep Kumar of PSG CAS in 2001.

Nirmala won the 5km walk title in a record time of 31:21.7s. She thus wiped the old mark of 31:41.6s set by S. Kavitha of Navarasam CAS in 2005.

Karthikeyan (Sri Krishna CAS) 2.01m (NMR, — OR 1.98m by T. Pradeep Kumar (PSGCAS) in 2001); Individual championship: Krishbeethovan (PSG CAS) 12 points; Team championship: Dr. NGP CAS 70 points.

Women: 10,000m: Gandhimathi (Kongu Arts) 46:05.08s; Hammer: S. Saranya Prakash (PSG CAS) 35.08m; 400m hurdles: R. Ramya (PSGR Krishnammal) 1:21.3s; 200m: S. Saranya (Kongu CAS) 28.9s; 800m: V. Rubadevi (Kongu Arts) 2:35.0s; Long jump: G. Nandhini (PSGR Krishnammal) 5.12m; Heptathlon: S. Kalpana (STC, Pollachi) 2678 points; 4x400m: Kongu Arts (4:37.6s); Individual championship: V. Rubadevi (Kongu Arts) 20 points; Team championship: Kongu CAS 71 points.

Kikani HSS triumphs

Kikani Higher Secondary School fashioned a 1-0 win over Karunya International Residential School to clinch the football title in the CDSMHSS Athletic Association inter-zone Republic Day sports tournament at the Sri Ramakrishna MHSS on Friday.

Sridhar struck in the 27th minute of the first session for the winner.

HPF SC posts win

At Udhagamandalam, HPF Sports Club thrashed Lightning Sports Club 7-0 in its opening fixture of the NDFA Sterling Biotech first division league on Friday.

John Martin struck three goals for the winner.
