‘Ganguly was dropped’

Hyderabad: “He has not been rested, he has been dropped,” the BCCI Secretary, Niranjan Shah, said about the omission of Sourav Ganguly from the third ODI here on Friday.

The former Indian captain had injured his hamstring during the first ODI of the Future Cup series, which forced him to miss the second match in Kochi. The fact that Shah said “dropped” and not “rested” indicated that the move was not a part of the rotation policy for the seniors that is being bandied about.

The decision was unfair to Ganguly. In his last ODI series, against England, Ganguly averaged 35.57, making three half-centuries and being involved with Sachin Tendulkar in three century partnerships.

Worse, Ganguly has not batted in the ongoing series. The Aussie pacemen have made deep inroads with the new ball with the plan to open with Gautam Gambhir coming unstuck.

Ganguly however, retains his place in the Indian squad for the fourth and fifth ODIs in Chandigarh (October 8) and Vadodara (October 11).

Lone change

The team sports a lone change, left-arm spinner Murali Kartik replacing off-spinner Ramesh Powar. He has the flight and the variations and could form a pair of contrasts with off-spinner Harbhajan Singh. Apart from the injured Piyush Chawla, the selectors have retained the side that won the World Twenty20 for the one-off Twenty20 match against Australia in Mumbai on October 20. — Special Correspondent
